Types of maps

AssaultCube maps can be distinguished in several ways. The most determing aspect is of course the quality of a map. This includes the how the layout is fitting to several gamemodes (e.g. a CTF map needs two flag bases), the details, the use of textures, mapmodels ad/or sounds. With that there are three groups:

  • High quality maps
They take ages to get done, or even just up to an alpha or beta stage. Mostly they are uploaded to a community site like Quadropolis or AKIMBO. A few of them are somtimes chosen to come with the game's original package. Others are put into additional so-called "Map Packs", to make it easier to distribute them along their extra textures and mapmodels if available.
  • Medium quality maps
These types of maps are decent enough to get played regularly, and take from a week to about 1 1/2 months to get done. The author usually doesn't put enough effort into it, yet the map has the potential to get up to high quality par. It may have the layout and miss the details or have the details and miss a good layout.
  • Low quality maps
These maps are made by people who are new to mapping, they have a poor layout and basically look like they have being bombed by the "l" button. It might consist of a sniper fort or a bunch of walls with the default textures set on it. Typically they have also too bright light, too much open space and too high buildings.

Beside this, maps can be also distinguished in the way how they are fitting to the theme and gameplay style which is intentend to AssaultCube. With that there are three groups:

  • Convenient maps
These maps are fitting one of the intended themes (industrial, urban, desert aso) and supporting one or more gamemodes.
  • Training/Jump maps
Training maps are basically obstacle courses for you to get past using your assault rifle and grenades. They test the wits of you and sheer knowledge of how to use these weapons. Most training maps are Gema maps, made by various people. Others are made by individuals who make their own sets of maps, e.g. Sharp with the Straining series of maps.
  • Fun Maps
These maps are just for fun, or as a joke. Maybe someone got bored and decided to make a house out of barrels. Who knows, these are made because its funny to make random stuff out of the ground.
